Capsule with Argentina land added to Polotsk phylactery

A capsule with red land of Argentina was added to Polotsk phylactery. The capsule and a patch for the phylactery was sent by descendants of Belarusian immigrants from the town of Obera of the Misiones Province of Argentina, BelTA learnt from head of the Roshva Club of the Polotsk House of Crafts Nina Yarmukh.

Polotsk phylactery keeps expanding due to new works of patchwork masters. It was first demonstrated in 2007, timed to the celebration of the 1145th anniversary of Polotsk. At that time the size of the phylactery composed of 45x45cm embroidered, weaved or sewn patches was 70 square meters, in early 2009 it reached 94 square meters. The phylactery consists of 427 patches made in different countries: Belarus, Russia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Denmark, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Estonia. The interest in the project was shown in Cuba, Venezuela and Japan.
After a long journey across the towns of the Vitebsk oblast this unique creation of folk crafts returned home, to Polotsk. It can be seen in the Polotsk House of Crafts.

It was the idea of Nina Yarmukh and other Roshva members to make something special for the town anniversary. Slavs believed that anything made by people with good intentions could serve as phylactery. The Roshva club hopes that by 2012, when the oldest Belarusian town will celebrate its 1150th anniversary, the phylactery will consist of more than 1150 patches.
